CLEAN ENERGY

We believe in the power of renewable resources to transform the energy landscape. Our team is committed to developing and implementing innovative clean energy solutions that reduce carbon emissions, increase energy efficiency, and promote a greener future for generations to come.

Electric Mobility

The global transportation sector is responsible for one-fifth of the world’s CO2 emissions which totalled 8 billion tonnes in 2018. Of this, road transport accounts for almost half.  Electric vehicles (EV) remain a key part of more sustainable transport and energy sectors. As Sri Lanka develops, the need for cleaner transport and energy becomes more important than ever before. However, Sri Lanka has been lagging in terms of EV adoption due to a lack of focused policy, poor consumer buy-in and a shortage of public and private investment and incentives.

In early 2021 ICI began developing a financially, economically, and socially sustainable strategy to convert petrol three-wheelers to electric. After detailed study, we propose a unique battery swapping model instead of traditional fixed batteries as the best solution to sustainably scale the conversion of petrol three wheelers to electric in countries like Sri Lanka. It not only benefits the three-wheeler owners but also helps the environment, can promote renewable energy use, reduce the burden on the electricity grid, and spurs further entrepreneurship.

In 2023, ICI incubated a company, Lanka E-Mobility Solutions (LEMS), to make this undertaking a reality. Our partners in this endeavour are the foremost organizations in their respective disciplines of technical competence, financial capacity and marketing know-how.

CIRCULAR

ECONOMY

Embracing the principles of circularity, we strive to minimize waste and maximize resource utilization. Our initiatives in this realm involve reimagining product lifecycles, promoting sustainable production practices, and encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in circularity.

Island Plastic Challenge

In keeping with our commitment to building a circular economy, ICI has been running the Island Plastic Challenge Project since early 2022 to identify and pilot innovative and mature solutions to some of Sri Lanka’s most pressing single-use plastic packaging challenges. Solutions under pilot include compostable alternatives to product packaging and labelling and the reincorporation of recycled plastic into primary packaging through a re-innovation of Sri Lanka’s plastic recycling value chain.

This project is funded by the United States Development Agency’s (USAID) Clean Cities, Blue Ocean program. ICI has been collaborating closely with 10 of Sri Lanka’s largest consumer goods companies and multiple technology providers from around the globe in identifying key challenges and in sourcing and piloting solutions to them. The Ministry of Environment has been an important stakeholder on this project since its inception to support ICI’s objective in ensuring that the solutions being developed are future-proofed within Sri Lanka’s existing and upcoming plastic waste management policies.

Plastic Innovation Challenge

During the course of our work on the Island Plastic Challenge Project, we noticed that many of the creative technologies in Sri Lanka, tackling the issue of plastic waste, never rise to the level of maturity required to bring about meaningful impact. We soon realized this was largely due to a lack of bespoke support and resources for innovators and entrepreneurs focused on finding sustainable solutions to plastic pollution.

In response, ICI in partnership with the National Innovation Agency (NIA), the MAS Foundation for Change and John Keells X (JKX) with funding and support from USAID’s Clean Cities Blue Oceans Program, launched the Plastic Innovation Challenge (PIC). The PIC works by providing tailormade support in the form of mentorship, knowledge sharing, technical assistance and network exposure to early-stage innovators to develop their products, business and find investment to take them to a stage where they can begin to have tangible change in plastic waste reduction.
